What a Difference!

My husband and I just drove to Panama City and back to Boquete.  On the drive east, we followed the PanAmercian Highway for the entire trip, but coming home we decided to take the road through Soná to avoid the worst of the highway construction.  Traveling along this lovely two-lane road, we passed many more packs of homeless dogs and cats than we have seen in the 9 months we've lived in Boquete.   It was sad to see so many beautiful animals wandering the road with traffic whizzing by, and coming close to death while searching for a little food and shelter.  It truly made me grateful for Amigos de Animales, and the wonderful work they do in reducing the population of feral animals in our area!

To our friends and animal lovers

Clinic Recaps, Official News
Fundacion Amigos de Animales has had a great year that saw the opening of our very own facility in which to hold our clinics and community events. We have spayed or neutered over 9500 animals in the Boquete area; this year alone, we sterilized 1907 animals. We have established feeding stations throughout the community to aid homeless animals and we provide life-saving food for helpless kittens and puppies brought in to our clinics. Our education program has begun working with the schools to teach the children how to care for their pets. Our goals for 2016 are to continue to provide low cost spay and neuter services for the dogs and cats of our community. We plan to expand our education program so that it can reach even more school…

October 2015 Clinic Recap

Clinic Recaps
On Sunday October 25, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 181 animals:  88 dogs and 93 cats. While this was not as big a clinic as planned, it was plenty big and went very well.  This year, at several clinics, the number of cats brought in equaled or surpassed the number of dogs; the cat trappers have been hard at work. Our annual total for 2015 is 1907 animals: 1062 dogs and 842 cats, the percentage for cats having gone up considerably from prior years.  Our total for 10 years is now 9577 animals; we should hit 10,000 by mid-year 2016! Hard to believe that we have completed a full year in our new facility.  Every time we walk into our new home, we are all filled with such gratitude and…

Amigos de Animales would like to thank the community for another successful calendar launch!! Months of planning, shooting, proofing and securing sponsors enabled the successful launch of the ADA 2016 calendar. The talented  photographers,  Beth Abrahams, Bernie Verhoeven, Larry Wilkinson, Gaby Bacon, Doreen DeLong and Robert Brauns dedicated their time and talents to bring us the best pictures ever. The Design and Production team of Doreen DeLong, Clare Taylor and Robert Brauns worked long hours to assure that all details were aesthetically pleasing and interviewed and selected a printer.   Thanks to our Proof Readers, Barb Severs, Jennie Allen and Doreen DeLong. A special thanks to Carol Cardinale-Santana for her many hours spent selling the banners and advertisements. Thank you Boquete for working together and supporting this wonderful project.   Dottie Thompson,…

A Volunteer’s Perspective

A Volunteer’s Perspective

As recent retirees and transplants to Boquete, my husband and I were determined to get involved with activities and volunteer work in our new home.  The very first opportunity presented itself when news of the annual meeting for Amigos de Animales was announced.  As animal lovers, we thought this might be something we’d enjoy doing.   We also remembered our first visit to Panama six years ago, when packs of feral dogs roamed the streets of many cities and towns throughout Panama.  This time around, we noticed the packs of dogs didn't exist in Boquete any more - and thought this group might have something to do with the change. After attending the annual meeting, we volunteered to help with the monthly spay and neuter clinic that is the cornerstone of this…

September 2015 Clinic Recap

Clinic News, Clinic Recaps
On Sunday, September 27, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 154 animals: 73 dogs and 81 cats, with 5 wonderful vets working all day. This year we have seen the trend of having as many or more cats as dogs at our clinic.  A good thing for the cat population, not necessarily a good thing for our guys doing intake.  The cats come in fighting and hissing, scratching and biting….just ask Dave or Phil or Ken how it feels to be on the receiving end of a seriously annoyed kitty!  But, thanks to those who are brave enough to trap and bring in these cats, they will now go on to lead healthier and more peaceful lives. Our pot luck lunches have been very successful.  As well as working hard, our…

August, 2015 Clinic Recap

Clinic Recaps, Official News
On Sunday August 30, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 233 animals, 135 dogs and 98 cats. This was planned to be a “small” clinic with 150 animals and 3 vets. But our friend Carmencita had different ideas. She bagged (literally, the cats arrived in coffee sacks) about 45 of them and our small clinic turned into the biggest clinic of the year. Fortunately, we had Dr. Sandy with us as well as Dr. Crespo from David so along with the higher number of animals, we ended up with 5 vets to get us through the longer than expected day. We are blessed to have new volunteers who, together with our old hands, ensure that we get the job done safely. As always, both new and old, we have the…

Education is the Key

Education is the Key

Blog Posts
It has long been the dream of our founder, Ruby McKenzie, to begin educating people in our area about the proper care, feeding and respect for our animal companions.  Our volunteers have embraced that dream and it is now a reality. Joan James and Magaly Bustamnante have undertaken to work directly in the schools to educate children about dogs and cats. The educational program we conduct focuses on children aged 10.  Children here have not always understood that animals have a heart just like theirs, and that they feel things like pain and hunger just as humans do.  Our educational program reviews the most important aspects of the care of dogs and cats, and emphasizes the need to have your pet sterilized.  The class requires no high tech equipment; large…

July, 2015 Clinic Recap

On Sunday July 26, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 166 animals, 84 dogs and 82 cats.  Once again, the number of cats at our clinic is increasing, almost the same as the dogs, and that is certainly a good thing for the stray and feral cat population. This was what we could call a “good clinic.”  We started on time and finished early (!)  and it all went according to plan. Of course, it certainly helps if you have 7 vets and lots of volunteers.  We have some new (to us) vets as well and our good friend Dr Tello has been working with them to ensure that they maintain our great record of safety and care for all the animals that we are entrusted with. I was originally…
