April, 2016 Clinic Recap

On Sunday April 24, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 175 animals, 85 dogs and 89 cats – a first to have more cats than dogs.  We had four vets working. It seemed like a slow day because our vets took time to care for some animals in distress. Among some of the problems presented, a dog who had gotten too close to a porcupine and had to be sedated while the quills were pulled from the inside of his mouth…who knew we even had porcupines here?! No matter how busy or how many animals are lined up, the vets never rush and always take the time to care for animals in need. We had some wonderful new volunteers that we hope will continue to work with us in future…

Refuge For Hundreds Of Stray Dogs By Dorothy Atwater What a wonderful idea! I wish we had something like this in Panama. (I do wonder if the dogs have all been sterilized...I think the video says have been. I also wonder if they get into fights. Just with my 16 dogs, sometimes one will be attacked. I keep a cattle prod handy!) There’s a refuge in Costa Rica called one of the best places on the planet for a stray dog to live. Territorio de Zaguates (or “Land of Stray Dogs”), is a no-kill refuge that cares for hundreds of homeless dogs, who can run free on the sprawling property in the hills outside of San Jose. The dogs are given food, water and shelter where they can sleep at night. It’s…

Published January 18, 2016 Police rescued 49 dogs and 5 cats from a home in North Bergen, New Jersey, last week, but that wasn’t the worst of it. In the house, they also found another dog and 11 cats — all 12 of them dead. In late December, authorities descended on the home of a woman living in Charleston, South Carolina, and rescued over 100 animals, rabbits, cats and dog. All of them lived in deplorable conditions, a risk not only to the animals but to the surrounding community. In one of the most extreme cases, authorities in Los Angeles reported rescuing over 600 animals from one home. Some of the animals were dead, and others were so ill they had to be euthanized. These are cases of animal hoarding, and it’s a bigger problem…

This was originally posted by Lee Zeltzer on his blog, The Boquete Panama Guide.  I am posting it here with his permission. On May 31 several, including two females are going to the Amigos de Animales clinic to terminate their reproductive careers. I obtained consent the owner to have them clipped. He said, he has too many mouths to feed. I suspect seeing them at a healthy weight but not leaving my carport inspired him to see the light.   As the current leader of the pack I have two inside doglets, one terrazza dog, the one in the cow photo and from four to six hounds living in the car port at any given moment. All but three are unplanned rescue dogs, but all have become dear and I doubt any…
